A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of the event.

Changing Odds in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the hours before Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.

One account, which registered on the site last month and made four bets, all on Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a initial bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that traders put the odds of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the midday period of the prior Friday.

Yet the odds had increased to eleven percent by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the early hours of the next day, suggesting a rapid movement in positions immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," said an industry expert.

A small number of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Intensifies

Elected officials are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation put forward on recently would prevent federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have grown significantly in recent years, with users able to predict everything from sports to politics.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Insider trading is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting industry.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
