Users Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study indicates that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using such treatments must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
